The first step in getting amazing backlinks is to ferret out the sites that already have fantastic backlinks and scrutinize their link profiles. The logic being that good content attracts links, as site owners feel compelled to share it with their audience. So in this first step, you’re looking for pages with ‘lotsa links’ because they’ve already proven to have link worthy content.

In the same way that a link from CNN is an indication that your site could be important, if you are linking to a specific page aggressively from various areas on your site, that’s an indication to search engines that that specific page is very important to your site. To identify sites that are likely to link back to your website, first look at the sites that link back to your competitors. Use Alexa’s Competitor Backlink Checker and enter up to 10 sites, including your own. The tool provides a high quality backlinks list, as it shows all of the sites that are already linking to your competitors. Use the backlink gaps filter to show gaps for your site, where competitors are getting links but you aren’t.
(5) Keywords:  Keywords or key phrases are the words and/or phrases that a visitor searches on in search engines.  Use such words or phrases in your website to increase the chances that people will find your site when searching for same in a search engine.  Also use keywords when placing pay-per-click ads, to get your ads to show up when someone searches for such keywords. Search engines want websites to have a level playing field, and look for natural links built slowly over time. While it is fairly easy to manipulate links on a web page to try to achieve a higher ranking, it is a lot harder to influence a search engine with external backlinks from other websites. This is also a reason why backlinks factor in so highly into a search engine's algorithm. Lately, however, a search engine's criteria for quality inbound links has gotten even tougher, thanks to unscrupulous webmasters trying to achieve these inbound links by deceptive or sneaky techniques, such as with hidden links, or automatically generated pages whose sole purpose is to provide inbound links to websites. These pages are called link farms, and they are not only disregarded by search engines, but linking to a link farm could get your site banned entirely.
Websites often link to web pages that offer timeless information that will be relevant over a long period. This type of evergreen content is often linked to, as other publishers know it will provide long-term value and is less likely to expire or become irrelevant. Build these type of evergreen resources and pages on your site to encourage more links back to your website.
3. General on-site optimization. On-site optimization is a collection of tactics, most of which are simple to implement, geared toward making your website more visible and indexable to search engines. These tactics include things like optimizing your titles and meta descriptions to include some of your target keywords, ensuring your site’s code is clean and minimal, and providing ample, relevant content on every page. You can find a more comprehensive list of keyword tools below, but the main idea is that in this initial step, you’ll want to run a number of searches with a variety of different keyword tools. You can also use competitive keyword tools like SEM Rush to see what terms your competitors are ranking for. These tools look at thousands of different search results, and will show you each search term they’ve seen your competitor ranking in Google for lately. All sites have a home or "root" page, which is usually the most frequented page on the site and the starting place of navigation for many visitors. Unless your site has only a handful of pages, you should think about how visitors will go from a general page (your root page) to a page containing more specific content. Do you have enough pages around a specific topic area that it would make sense to create a page describing these related pages (for example, root page -> related topic listing -> specific topic)? Do you have hundreds of different products that need to be classified under multiple category and subcategory pages?

(9) Avoid Black Hat SEO Tactics:  Google considers certain tactics to be “black hat” tactics and they will quickly penalize you for them.  Let’s say you would like your site to rank highly for the search phrase “document storage.”  So you put the phrase “document storage” 50 times on a page. And you put the words in white font against a white background so that your visitors to the page do not see them.  But guess what?  The search engines will see that repetition of the keywords and recognize that you are trying to not only game the results by “stuffing” keywords, but hide it, too.  That’s a double no-no. The biggest challenge is knowing what is black hat versus what is legitimate.  Sometimes it’s easy to tell – such as my example above.  Clearly there was an attempt to hide the activity – that should tell you it’s wrong.  But other tactics are not so black and white (pun intended!). The best thing is to read up on what’s legitimate, and what’s not. Or, if you use an outside SEO provider, talk openly about this issue and let them know you are not interested in crossing the line.
